4 Reasons, Why Session Id’s are Bad for SEO ?

by Prashant Kumar Sharma

I keep hearing on internet in SEO best-practices or approaches that session id’s are bad for Search Engine Optimization(SEO), but no one tells, WHY ? So i took some time to search as to why do engines(google, yahoo, bing) have such problems, what are the factors which affect the ranking in respect of Session ID.

Here is a list of affects of Session id in a URL:

1.  One good reason, you never want a session ID to show up in a URL when it is being Indexed spidered by search engines. As Spiders cannot accept cookies and this creates a conflict for session IDs. You can end up with hundreds of versions of the URL for the same page in search engine indexes.

3. Now imagine you write a great article about basketball. It’s perfect in every way and people love it, so they start linking to it. Instead of them linking to one page, now they are linking to the page with the session id that was assigned to their visit. Now all of the links are going to separate pages instead of just one. If you want to get a page to rank, you need links.

4. In addition to the above scenario, there is also chance that Session id , stores preference of a user, so each time if crawler is crawling the page, it is finding it different, each time customized as the per the user settings not what we want the page to be indexed as.
